Perhaps cruising up or down the Intercoastal Waterway, or kayaking into pristine backwater areas and Everglades National Park. If you prefer the ocean side you can be through Adam's Cut and into Largo Sound, Pennekamp State Park, and the Atlantic Ocean in a matter of minutes. Several restaurants are within walking distance of Moon Bay or accessible by car or boat within minutes. There are many excellent restaurants that offer outside dining as well as several that provide delivery if you prefer to order in. Activities: Diving: If you are a diver you probably already know that Key Largo is noted as being the dive capital of the world! Dive the largest living reef and marine sanctuary in the hemisphere! Dive in the first underwater park and preserve in the world - Pennekamp Park! Dive on the Spiegel Grove (the largest ship [510’] ever intentionally sunken to become a dive destination and reef) and many other wrecks and dive spots! You can bring your own boat (30’ slip included with your Penthouse A501 unit), rent one nearby (within walking distance) by the hour or the day, or go out on any one of the dozens of charters offered that include a private or small group charter or become part of a large group and make new friends! Dive sites are available for everyone from the first-time beginners to advanced technical and specialty divers. Dive instructors, guides, and charters are available throughout the Keys, and as close as next door. You can learn to scuba dive in a single morning or afternoon resort course. You may choose to take advanced training or specialty instruction while in the Keys. Swimming and snorkeling are available right off of your own dock! Two sets of basic snorkeling gear are included with your rental of Penthouse A501. Additional gear can be rented from local dive shops and dive operators. The water here is so clean and clear that you can generally see the bottom while still sitting on the dock! Fishing: Depending on your preferences and the season you can fish for Bonefish, Grouper, Mahi-Mahi, Permit, Snapper, Tarpon, etc. You can fish right off of the dock at moon bay, go back country flats “Skinny Water” and fly fishing, or offshore trolling or deep-water fishing in the Gulf Stream. Just a 20 minute ride south is Islamorada, the Fishing capital of the world! Boats, captains, and guides of all sizes and descriptions are available for hire there. Most fishing charters will provide all gear and tackle needed. If you want to purchase gear it is readily available, including the World Wide Sportsman [Bass Pro Shops] in Islamorada. Boating: Bring your own boat or personal watercraft. Don't have a boat or PWC? You can rent one nearby by the hour or day. You can charter fishing trips, dive trips or go out on your choice of glass bottom boats (highly recommend) or dinner cruises. Water skiing, wake boarding, tubing, personal water craft, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, or just floating on a raft are perfect ways to play here in the protected waters in Blackwater Sound. There are several fuel docks on the water and several ship’s stores including Boater’s World and West Marine in Key Largo. Tennis: Two tennis courts are available for your use (at no additional charge) right on the Moon Bay property at the base of your building. Golf: There are several golf courses within driving distance (pun intended) in South Florida. The Doral is less than one hour away. For serious golfers we have condo units available at PGA village [W. Port St. Lucie] 3 hours north. Swimming: There are two very nice fresh water pools located in the center of the property. One is referred to as a "Kiddie" pool, and one for everyone else. Very healthy saltwater Swimming is also available in the seasonally warm clean and clear waters of Blackwater Sound off of our docks and beyond our marina. There is also plenty of deck area for relaxing and sun bathing on the dock, around the pool, and on a sun deck adjacent to the pool with beautiful views of the marina and sunset. Tours: There are a wide range of both organized and self-guided tours throughout the Florida Keys. A glass bottom boat tour around Key Largo is a popular and informative choice. If you are even more nature oriented you might take an eco-tour through the backcountry or everglades. Kayak and airboat tours are both available. You might enjoy taking a self-guided driving tour down the Overseas Highway to Key West using the audio CD you will find in Penthouse A501 that describes Mile Marker points of interest and histoy of the Florida Keys. Once in Key West there are numerous tours you can take around town. Some are walking and self-guided. Perhaps the best known is the Conch Train trolley tour around the island. Dining: Everything from fast food drive-thru restaurants (including Mac Donald’s, Wendy’s, Arby’s, Taco Bell, KFC) to Chinese take-away and pizza delivery to sushi, Italian, French, steakhouses and outdoor patios and waterfront fine dining. There are well over 50 dining choices within ten minutes of Moon Bay. As you might expect, there is excellent fresh seafood here! Several restaurants are accessible by boat featuring their own dock for a unique lunch or evening out. Restaurants can have a long wait, and often do not serve after 9PM with some exceptions, so call ahead for reservations or to get on a wait list (if they take them). This can be a concern if you have been playing a long summer day that does not get dark until nearly 9PM. We have compiled a list of restaurants with locations, directions, hours of operation, phone numbers, menu (if possible) and our feedback and experience as well as that of other guests. We welcome your feedback to our growing list. There are also dinner cruises ranging from a private charter or small family bbq trip, up to full dinner or a sunset "Booze Cruise". Shopping: The Keys have no shortage of souvenir shops along the highway. We also have the largest selection of dive shops you have ever seen. There is a K-Mart in Key Largo and a Walmart and Outlet mall 30 minutes north in Florida City. The very large Dolphin shopping mall is within a one hour drive north. Provisioning can be easily done from a number of mini-markets as well as two major grocery stores (Publix & Winn-Dixie) within a mile, complete with fresh fruits and vegetables, deli, bakery, and beer, wine, and liquor sales. Provisioning can be provided for you for cost plus 20%. Sunsets: Even after a full day of activities (or lack thereof) the Sunsets here are spectacular! Many guests and residents migrate daily towards and on to the dock and West End breakwater of the marina to celebrate the sunset. Enjoy a tranquil end of the day, a few quiet and romantic moments, or perhaps make new friendships there. If you prefer a bit more intimacy you can always enjoy the sunset views from the privacy of your own balcony of Penthouse A501. Off-island: Can you say "Miami"? How about "South Beach"? If you want to experience an entirely different world from the Keys, and indeed a world of its own, Miami! You are only about an hour away from the historic Art Deco District. South Beach is once again the place to see and be seen. Enjoy a meal while watching the world stroll past you at one of the many sidewalk restaurants and cafes. Nighttime in South Beach is all about nightclubs. Be (or see) one of the beautiful people! Shopping in Miami and the surrounding area is second to none! If you are looking for something, just about anything, you can probably find it in Miami. Several Cruise ships call Miami or Ft. Lauderdale their home port.Renters here often begin or end their holiday in Key Largo with a cruise. It cam be part of a great vacation package. Are casinos of interest to you? There is a casino daily cruise ship that operates out of Key Largo, or a Native American gaming casino is located in the Miami area. |
